COMMUNITY CINEMA - The Return
Wednesday 11th March
Doors Open 6.30; Film starts 7.00 pm
After years away from his homeland, a weary Odysseus (Ralph Fiennes) returns to Ithaca only to find his realm overrun by ruthless nobles vying for his throne. His wife Penelope (Juliette Binoche) faces mounting pressure to choose a new husband, his son Telemachus (Charlie Plummer) struggles with resentment, and the kingdom teeters on the brink of collapse. Disguised and uncertain of his own strength, he must confront betrayal, fractured bonds, and the weight of his past before reclaiming the life he left behind.
WHY WATCH THIS FILM? For two standout performances.
“A handsome production, Marius Panduru makes particularly good use of flickering fire and candlelight to add atmosphere. Fiennes is lean in look and in performance, bringing an intensity that proves compelling.” Eye for Film
“Binoche and Fiennes are both imperious. . . Pasolini’s film is built around their dynamic. It’s their interplay in spartan rooms and amid the chiaroscuro of flickering firelight that elevates The Return to a nuanced psychological drama that is both unflinching and gripping.” Sight and Sound
“The story may have been told many times before, but Uberto Pasolini’s sombre, handsome interpretation of Homer’s Odyssey has a few things going for it. The location – Corfu, shot with a tawny late-summer glow, doubling for Ithaca – is one. But the main draw is the cast, with Ralph Fiennes sinewy and racked by self-doubt and guilt as Odysseus, returned from war after a 20-year absence, and a compelling turn from Juliette Binoche as Penelope. Both are terrific, but Binoche is the standout.” The Guardian
